Parenteral

Parenteral

Parenteral means that a medicine or nutrient solution is administered bypassing the digestive tract, for example via a vein or an injection. The opposite term is enteral, i.e. uptake via the intestine. Parenteral nutrition becomes necessary when the gastrointestinal tract cannot be used.
