Which hospital type for what

University hospital
Highest level of care with research and teaching. Responsible for rare diseases, complex procedures and severe emergencies.
Cantonal/central hospital
Broad range of specialties under one roof, usually with a large emergency department. Covers most inpatient treatments in a canton.
Regional/basic care
Basic care close to home: common surgeries, births, internal medicine, often with emergency admission.
Specialist clinic
Focused on one field — such as ophthalmology, orthopaedics or cardiology. High routine in their own specialty, but not a full range of services.
Rehabilitation clinic
Rehabilitation after surgery, accident or serious illness — musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiac or pulmonary.
Psychiatric clinic
Inpatient and day-patient treatment of mental illnesses, often with outpatient clinic and crisis admission.

Hospital choice: what basic insurance covers

  • Free choice of hospital throughout SwitzerlandYou may receive treatment at any hospital listed on a canton's hospital list — even outside your canton of residence.
  • Out-of-canton treatment may incur costsFor a self-selected treatment outside your canton of residence, the canton and insurer will cover at most the tariff applicable in your canton of residence. You pay any difference yourself or through supplementary insurance.
  • Emergency and medical necessityIf treatment must take place out of canton for medical reasons or in an emergency, it is fully covered according to the usual rules.
  • General, semi-private, private wardBasic insurance covers the general ward. Semi-private or private — free choice of doctor, single or double room — requires supplementary insurance.
  • Before a planned procedureClarify cost approval, insurance class and any referral with your insurer and referring physician before admission.

Case numbers and quality indicators

The ANQ publishes the official measurement results of Swiss hospitals — surgical site infections, readmissions, falls, patient satisfaction. The data is available per measurement, not as a profile per hospital: you first select the measurement, then the measurement year, and search for your hospital within it. That's why we deliberately link to the selection rather than to a page that doesn't exist for each hospital.

This list is for guidance only and does not collect its own quality data. Information may be incomplete — the hospital's own information and official registers are authoritative.
