Basic Insurance

What does basic insurance cover?

Mandatory basic insurance (KVG) covers the same medically necessary services for everyone. What's included — and what's not.

Costs & Insurance / Basic Insurance

Generally covered

  • Treatment by doctors and in hospital (general ward in canton of residence)
  • Medications on the Specialties List (see below)
  • Medically prescribed physiotherapy and other therapies
  • Maternity: prenatal care, delivery, postnatal check-ups
  • Emergencies and medically necessary examinations
  • Certain preventive and early detection examinations
  • Hospital treatment outside your canton of residence without medical reason — covered up to the rate of your canton of residence; you or your supplementary insurance pay the rest

Generally NOT covered

  • Dental treatment (except for certain diseases)
  • Glasses and contact lenses (adults, with few exceptions)
  • Purely cosmetic procedures
  • Private room and additional comfort in hospital (subject to supplementary insurance)
  • Most medications not listed on the Specialties List

Is my medication reimbursed?

For every medication approved in Switzerland, we show on its page whether basic insurance covers it — including co-payment and any Limitatio (prior authorization requirement).
