Bilirubin (total)

Liver · Bilirubin, Bile pigment

Typical Reference Range< 21 µmol/l
Unitµmol/l

What This Value Measures

Bilirubin is a breakdown product of red blood pigment and is excreted via the liver. Markedly elevated levels can lead to yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Elevated Value

An elevated level may indicate impaired bile flow, liver disease, or increased breakdown of red blood cells.

Low Value

Low levels have no clinical significance.

Note: A benign, congenital variant (Morbus Meulengracht, Gilbert syndrome) can slightly raise the value.

Reference ranges are typical guide values for adults and vary depending on the laboratory, measurement method, age and sex — always compare with the range stated on your own report. A value outside the range does not automatically mean an illness, and a value within the range does not rule one out. The trend and overall picture are usually more informative than a single value. The doctor's assessment is always decisive.
